Registration and Lost Password Pages

4 min readUpdated October 31, 2026

Besides the login form, the portal styles WooCommerce’s registration form and lost password form in the same design. Customers switch between signing in and creating an account with two tabs, and reset a forgotten password without ever seeing your theme’s default WooCommerce pages.

Turn on registration#

The Create account form only appears when WooCommerce allows customers to register on the My Account page. WC Account Portal follows that setting; it has no separate switch.

  1. Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Accounts & Privacy.
  2. Under account creation, tick the option that lets customers create an account on the “My account” page.
  3. Save. While you are there, decide whether WooCommerce should generate the username and password for new customers (see Email-Only Login).

With registration on, the login page shows two tabs above the form: Sign in and Create account. With registration off, the tabs are hidden and only the login form is shown.

How the tabs work#

  • Sign in opens /my-account/, Create account opens /my-account/?action=register. You can link to the register address directly, for example from a “Create an account” button in your header.
  • Only one form is shown at a time, full width. WooCommerce prints both forms side by side by default; the portal hides the one that is not selected.
  • The tabs are hidden on the lost password page and while a customer is completing a two-factor login step (with Nahnu Login Shield).
  • The account drawer’s “Create account” button (shortcode [wap_account_nav]) also opens the Create account tab.
  • Fields other plugins add to the WooCommerce registration form (for example a newsletter tick box or extra customer fields) appear in the form as usual.

The lost password page#

Customers reach it with the Lost your password? link under the login form. It opens WooCommerce’s lost password address (/my-account/lost-password/ by default) in the portal design, using the same layout, logo and colours as the login page.

The customer enters their username or email address (or only their email address with Email-Only Login), and WooCommerce emails them a link to set a new password. The email itself is WooCommerce’s Reset password email, which you can edit in WooCommerce > Settings > Emails.

The portal uses WooCommerce’s own lost password handler, so every step stays in the portal design: the form, the “reset link sent” confirmation after the customer sends it, and the “set a new password” form the email link opens.

What the portal adds to these forms#

The password button only adds itself when the field does not already have one (WooCommerce and some themes add their own), so customers never see two eye icons.

CAPTCHA on these forms#

Each of the three forms can be protected separately. In WooCommerce > Account Portal > CAPTCHA / Spam, the Apply to row has Login form, Registration form and Lost password form, all ticked by default. The Lost password form setting also covers the “Forgot password” view in the account drawer, and Login form covers the drawer’s sign-in. The registration check runs only on the My Account registration form (accounts created at checkout are not checked), and the lost password check only on the My Account lost password form (WordPress’s own wp-login.php lost password page is not checked). See Setting Up CAPTCHA: An Overview.

Tip

Registration and lost password forms are common targets for spam accounts and floods of reset emails, so keep at least those two ticked.

Good to know#

  • These pages are only for logged-out visitors. A logged-in customer who opens /my-account/ sees the portal dashboard.
  • The page layout comes from the portal, not your theme: the theme header, footer and any page builder design on the My Account page are not shown to logged-out visitors.
  • On phones the forms use the full width; Centered card and Full background keep the card on your brand colour.
  • WooCommerce’s own notices (for example a wrong password or an account that already exists) appear above the form.
