Automatic Updates

3 min readUpdated October 31, 2026

Once your license is active, WC Account Portal updates like a plugin from WordPress.org: new versions show up on the Plugins screen and in Dashboard > Updates, and you install them with one click or let WordPress do it automatically.

Before you start#

  • Your license is activated on this site (WooCommerce > Account Portal > License shows Active). Without an active license, WordPress gets no update information for the plugin. See Activating Your License.
  • Your site can make outgoing HTTPS connections to api.surecart.com.

Update the plugin#

  1. Go to Dashboard > Updates or the Plugins screen.
  2. When a new version is available, WC Account Portal shows “There is a new version of WC Account Portal available.”
  3. Click View version x.x details to read the changelog, or update now to install it.

Your settings are kept. On the first page load after an update, the plugin runs a short one-time check (for example, it refreshes the account page addresses of your custom pages if needed). There is nothing for you to do.

Turn on automatic updates#

On the Plugins screen, click Enable auto-updates in the WC Account Portal row. WordPress then installs new versions in the background, as it does for other plugins.

Tip

Before a major update on a busy store, download a settings file on WooCommerce > Account Portal > Export / Import. It takes a second and gives you an easy way back.

How update checks work#

DetailBehaviour
Where updates come fromSureCart’s licensing service, through the SureCart Licensing SDK bundled with the plugin.
How often the plugin checksAlong with WordPress’s own update checks. The answer is kept for 3 hours.
Checking right nowOpen Dashboard > Updates: this page always asks for the latest version, without waiting for the 3 hours.
Changing the licenseActivating or deactivating the license clears the stored update information.
Download linkThe link to the new version is valid for a limited time. If an update fails with a download error, open Dashboard > Updates to get a fresh link and try again.

Updating without a license#

If you do not have an active license, you can still update by hand:

  1. Download the new zip from your account at wcaccountportal.com.
  2. Go to Plugins > Add New Plugin > Upload Plugin and upload the zip.
  3. WordPress asks whether to replace the installed version. Click Replace current with uploaded.

Your settings are kept, as with an automatic update.

Troubleshooting#

  • No update shows, but you know there is one. Check that the License tab shows Active, then open Dashboard > Updates to check again.
  • The License tab says your site could not reach SureCart. Ask your host to allow outgoing connections to api.surecart.com.
  • Multisite. Plugin updates are installed for the whole network from the network admin.
